Note: the information below was written prior to 2015, when the race moved to a new venue at the Cape Academy in Firgrove Way.
The reasons for doing this were twofold:
1) Damage from fires in the Tokai Forest made the route unsafe.
2) SANParks wanted to charge a significant event fee per runner, which would have more than doubled the cost of entry to the race and was against the ethos of what Southern Striders was (is) trying to accomplish with the race.
An 8km option was added from 2016.

Every year since 1993, on 26th December, enthusiastic runners have assembled below the Tokai Manor House in the Tokai Forest to try to run off some of the culinary excesses of the holiday season.
From humble beginnings, the race has grown in popularity with upcountry and indeed overseas runners and there are currently around 1000 runners every year.
The 16km (10 mile) route is scenic but challenging being mostly on gravel and including significant uphill segments. The route is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs.
